Leaf Out

Boy it has been a slow build up to Spring in Boston.  Even though I first sighted crocuses in mid-March, it was a long wait for the rest of it.  Finally Easter weekend my daffodils opened, and since that happened it's been coming fast and furious.  At Easter we still didn't have leaves on the trees - fast forward to today one week later and I'm surrounded by leafy spring time.  My azaleas popped and my vinca flowered too.

I consider it somewhat of an achievement that the bulbs I planted in Fall actually came up.  The crocuses and other little bulbs that went in with the daffodils have pretty much all been chomped by some animal now, but they did come up.  Squirrels?  And most of the plants that Marilyn and I transplanted have started showing signs of life as well - just like she said they would. :)

I also decided that it was time to get the fountain going again.  Pretty gross chore cleaning out all the mucky water and leaves that accumulated over the winter.  There was a little trial and error with how to put the motor back in.  My first guess was so wrong that I ended up covered in muck as it spouted straight up.  I considered bailing to take a shower but managed to persevere and now have a working fountain.  It goes great with my newly rebuilt retaining wall.

Now I just have to sort out what to do about the lawn.  I had it aerated, fertilized and seeded in the areas where it seemed to have been dying out.  Unfortunately this seems to have mostly had the effect of sprouting lots of large dandelions everywhere they worked on the lawn.  Ugh.  How do I get the dandelions out of the lawn before it gets worse?  Pull them and try to overseed again?

  1. You should email Jim about the lawn. He's become a professional. Pictures look lovely. It feels like autumn here again today, 52 degrees! Brrr.
