Almost time to get gardening

For a few days there it was feeling so like Spring that I called a couple landscapers for estimates on doing my Spring clean up.  Of course when they arrived this morning to check the place it out, it couldn't have felt less like Spring as we walked over the frost covered ground.

The first piece of good news was "you've got grubs".  Ugh.  I think Jim may have mentioned this to me last summer but I didn't do anything about it.  Luckily I did a little internet checking and it looks like there's no point in treating grubs in the Spring.  Better to wait to mid- summer.  Excellent.

Otherwise it was all pretty straight forward.  I've appreciated having a very small percentage of my outdoor space covered in grass.  Not much mowing to do.  The downside of this I learned, is how much you have to pay to mulch all the rest of the property.  $1k for a thick layer of mulch and labor.   Ouch.  Reminds me of the nursery where I used to work that would post a huge sign for "MULCH MADNESS!"  Now I get it.

Later on I was checking out the signs of grubs. Thought I'd just step on some of the pushed up earth to make it look a little nicer.  Oops, that was where my daffodils and crocuses are just starting to push up through the ground.  Boo for stepping on the first flowers of the season.  Yay, that I actually have some bulbs popping through!  Hopefully I haven't done much damage by packing down the soil around them.

I have also of course contacted my friend Marilyn for her gardening expertise.  Critical questions like when do I have them put down the gagillion $s worth of mulch?  And what about fertilizing - I should do that right?  I am of course open to any suggestions others are willing to share.  By the way, should I plant herbs in a big container outside or find a spot in the garden? Somehow the spring gardening seems so much more appealing than that other tradition of spring house cleaning.  (someone else's tradition of spring house cleaning that is!)
