A Greener Thumb

One of the things about being unemployed is that it's hard to spend all your time looking for a new job.  Or at least that's true the way I look for a job.  That leaves a decent amount of free time for projects around the house, working out, financial planning, and walking the dog.

Not that I do all those things equally.  I still seem to be able to avoid working out most of the time, even without the standby "i had to work late" excuse. And the piles of papers in my office have only grown.

But I have taken the opportunity to try my hand at gardening. Having a friend who's really knowledgable and willing to come over for an afternoon and show you some basics makes all the difference.  If I had a friend who was a carpenter, maybe I'd be fixing the stair railing instead.

Marilyn came over to help do a little Fall transplanting.  Mostly we were just trying to fill in empty spots.  I was surprised at how straight forward it seemed and the sense of accomplishment at the end.  Plus it gave me a new excuse about why I didn't need to go workout.

So once my confidence was bolstered, I went to Lowe's for a few basic tools and a garden center for some bulbs.  The next step was to rip out a border of mint which probably ran amok for several years.  All I can say is I worked pretty hard to really get most of the roots up.  Planting the bulbs was a breeze after that.  (then I watered and covered up with leaves per Marilyn's instructions!)

I guess I'll see if I did it right come Spring.  I figure I've got a fighting chance.  I may end up asking Marilyn to come back over and tell me what I did wrong, but for now I feel like my thumb is a bit greener than before.  Now if I could remember to water my houseplants...
