As much as I'm kind of trying to figure out how to do things around my new house, I have to say it's great to have a bunch of reliable service people. People who aren't trying to rip you off, who give honest advice, who show up when expected, and clean up after themselves.
This morning was crazy productive as I had 4 different helpers in and out. I felt like "I" was crazy productive, even though I did little more than answer questions. In fact of the 4 service people I only wrote one check! I've become unused to people who trust their customers to pay them when billed. Nice change of pace.
I am acquiring quite the list of suppliers since buying the house. Today I had two handymen (weird i know) and irrigation guy and clock repair guy. I'm also learning to value folks in jobs like these who use email. I sent a few emails to different antique clock repair companies that I found on the web. No one returned my note. Weeks later I tried calling one of them and voila; the guy could come see the clock the next day. I'm feeling a little compelled to give him some friendly advice using the internet when he returns my clock. I expect that all it will do is put me at the bottom of the list of people to call back the next time my clock breaks.
One thing I really don't miss about living in the city is all the service providers who don't want to take your business because they won't be able to find parking. Seriously. It's a joy to live on a dead end with oodles of free parking. And to find someone who uses email and gives good advice even when they can tell I couldn't call their bluff if I tried.
