Handicap ramp to nowhere

There's nothing like a little neighborhood drama to help you meet your neighbors.  I was out walking Maisy and when I came back there were a couple people checking out my house from the street.  Well not really checking out my house as much as they were checking out the big ditch that has been dug in front of my house.

I got a knock on the door this morning and the public works folks told me they were putting in a handicap ramp in front of my house.  Uh, why?  This may seem like a reasonable thing to do - complying with laws and such.  However there isn't actually anywhere to walk to in the location where they're putting the ramp!  See anywhere to go? No that's correct, it's a fence. (my house is out of view on the left of the pic)

But comply they will, no matter what.  So now I've got this ditch in front of my house which will eventually become a handicap ramp like the one below.
I have to admit that I was a lot less phased by this than my neighbor who is also having one put in front of her house.  She raised such hell about it that they told her she should come see my house.  The workers said it was worse for me because they have to rip out some of my flowers in the front and that there is no way anyone will actually need to use the ramps where they're putting it.  Lovely.  At least I'm getting known in the neighborhood!
